Why imposter syndrome won’t go away

Imposter syndrome is a pain in the ass, experienced by all, repetitively.

What makes it particularly painful, is that just like covid, you don’t always see it coming, the symptoms are not always the same and it evolves in different variations. Real fun. Also, it feels like it never really goes away.

Imposter syndrome is a beautiful fabrication of the mind, likely enhanced by society and either based on irrational thoughts or fear-based thoughts.

  1. Fear-based imposter syndrome

Here’s the deal. You’re starting that new job, studying something new, being a first-time parent... You’re basically (way out) of your comfort zone and don’t know what you are doing.
If life was a video game, you just unlocked a new level, and you’re figuring it out. Maybe your avatar keeps on dying or is just struggling to find its ground. You’re not as good as you were in the previous level and it pisses you off.

That imposter syndrome is quite rational, you are doing something you’ve never done before, so your mind is having a field trip, bombarding you with negative self-talk.

Truth is, you’ve done it before. Not that exact new role, or raising kids, but you’ve been out of your comfort before. You’ve started something new before. And, what happened? You
